Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) salted butter (for icing)
  • 1/2 cup milk (for icing)
  • Dash of salt (for icing)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for icing)
  • 1 box (1 lb) powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 10×15 baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter, stir in cocoa powder and coffee, then bring to a boil and remove from heat.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract, then set aside.
  5. Combine the hot cocoa mixture with the flour mixture, then add the buttermilk mixture and whisk until blended.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. To prepare the icing, sift together powdered sugar and cocoa powder in a bowl.
  8. In a saucepan, heat butter, milk, and salt until simmering, then stir in vanilla extract and pour into the powdered sugar mixture until smooth.
  9. Allow icing to sit for 5 minutes, then pour it over the warm cake. Let it rest for a few hours before serving.
