Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (125g)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup packed light or dark brown sugar (65g)
  • 1/4 cup milk (60g/ml)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream or plain yogurt (60g)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (28g)
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (200g)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (113g)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and grease donut pan(s) with nonstick spray.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg, brown sugar, milk, and sour cream until smooth.
  4. Incorporate the melted butter and vanilla into the wet mixture.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  6. Spoon the batter into the donut cavities, filling each about halfway.
  7. Bake for 10 minutes or until lightly browned; test for doneness by pressing the top of a donut.
  8. Cool the donuts in the pan for 2 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
  9. Prepare the topping by combining granulated sugar and ground cinnamon in a medium bowl.
  10. Dip the cooled donuts in melted butter and then coat in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  11. Serve shortly after coating for the best texture.

Notes

Do not overmix the batter for tender donuts. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
