  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, salt, and pepper until just combined.
  3. Shape the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and set aside.
  4. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat, add sliced onions, and cook for about 15 minutes until soft and golden brown.
  5. Add meatballs to the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes until browned.
  6. Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper; simmer for 5 minutes.
  7. Transfer the mixture to a 9×13-inch baking dish and top with shredded cheese. Bake for 30 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and golden.

Notes

This casserole can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours before baking. Adjust seasonings for a milder flavor for kids.
