Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for rolling)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ tsp)
  • 1 cup warm milk (not boiling)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 lb ground beef (or substitute with mushrooms for a vegetarian option)
  • 1 cup chopped onions
  • 1 cup mashed potatoes
  • 1 cup sauerkraut
  • 1 cup fresh fruits or jam (for sweet piroshki)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add flour until the dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. While the dough rises, cook the meat and onion mixture (or any other filling) in a skillet over medium heat until browned.
  6. Once the dough rises, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface. Cut into circles, fill with your chosen filling, and seal the edges.
  7. Place in the slow cooker on low for 2–3 hours or air fry at 350°F for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

Use instant yeast for a quicker rise and brush with egg wash for a crispy crust.
