Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sourdough starter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (for filling)
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon (for filling)
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional, for filling)
  • 1/2 cup melted butter (for sticky topping)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (for sticky topping)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup (optional, for sticky topping)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sourdough starter, sugar, salt, milk, and melted butter. Mix until well incorporated.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for around 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Roll the dough into a rectangle, approximately 12×18 inches. Spread melted butter evenly over the dough.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle evenly over the buttered dough, followed by chopped nuts if using.
  6. Starting from one long side, tightly roll the dough into a log. Slice into 1-inch pieces.
  7. In your slow cooker, combine melted butter with brown sugar and maple syrup. Arrange the sliced rolls in the slow cooker, then pour any remaining butter-sugar mix on top. Cook on low for 2-3 hours.

Notes

These sticky buns can be made ahead of time. Shape the rolls and refrigerate overnight, then let them rise at room temperature before cooking the next day.
