Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Biscuits (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, crumble and brown the sausage until it’s no longer pink (about 5-7 minutes). Transfer it to the slow cooker.
  2. In the same skillet, sprinkle flour over the rendered fat and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  3. Slowly add the milk to the roux, whisking continuously until smooth, then stir in the pepper, salt, and cayenne (if using).
  4. Pour the milk mixture over the sausage in the slow cooker. Stir to combine well.
  5. Set your slow cooker to low for 4-6 hours or high for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally until the gravy is thickened.
  6. Once thick, serve the sausage gravy over warm biscuits. Enjoy!

Notes

Feel free to use turkey sausage or a plant-based alternative for a lighter option. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
