Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to the creamed mixture, alternating with milk.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool the cakes in pans for 10 minutes then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, beat together softened butter and cocoa until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and heavy cream, mixing until fluffy.
  9. Spread frosting between the two cakes and frost the top and sides.
  10. Slice, serve, and enjoy!
