Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of brioche or challah
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar, plus extra for caramelizing
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Slice the loaf of brioche or challah into thick slices and arrange in a greased baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
  3. Pour custard over the arranged bread slices, ensuring each piece is soaked, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C), remove plastic wrap, and bake for 30-35 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  5. Let cool slightly, then sprinkle granulated sugar on top and caramelize using a kitchen torch or broiler.
  6. Serve with fresh berries, whipped cream, or maple syrup.
